Tips for maintaining your own unit:

Keep your outdoor unit coil clean from all weeds and flowers that restrict airflow.
Sometimes a unit will develop a refrigerant leak, but your problem isn't always the compressor. Many problems are easily and inexpensively replaced, such as a wire, contactor, capacitor, motor or safety switches.
